Joan's in the Park
About This Spot
Joan’s in the Park is a quietly elegant haven tucked along a charming stretch of Snelling Avenue in St. Paul. From the moment you step inside, there’s a comforting feeling that unfolds — a blend of intimate warmth and thoughtful simplicity that invites you to slow down and savor the evening. The lighting feels soft but deliberate, setting a measured, calm pace where conversation flows freely and every moment has space to gather meaning.
The atmosphere strikes a rare balance between refined and approachable. It’s not a place that wants to overwhelm you with spectacle, but rather welcomes you with a well-curated ease that hints at deep care behind every detail. The staff move with genuine attentiveness, discreetly present but never intrusive, layering the night with a subtle sense of being looked after. You quickly get the impression this is where locals come to mark the quiet milestones just as fully as the big celebrations.
The culinary experience here is less about simply ordering a meal and more about unfolding a narrative of seasonal ingredients and gentle surprises. Expect dishes that feel both rooted and inventive, where rich textures meet unexpected hints — the sweetness of roasted beets alongside tangy cheese, or delicate masa corn dumplings offering spicy warmth against the cool backdrop of fresh herbs. The seafood arrives as a silky complement to fresh, bright notes, while steaks and braised meats carry familiar comfort with a refined finish. Pairings of wine and bubbles are generous and thoughtfully chosen, enhancing each course with an underlying harmony that feels intuitive rather than prescribed.
What stands out most at Joan’s is the way the kitchen’s care extends into the room, making guests feel truly accounted for — from moments that catch you off guard with a small personal touch, to the unpretentious friendliness of Joan herself as she moves through the space. The restaurant holds a quiet energy that lifts ordinary evenings into memorable ones, where food, atmosphere, and human connection are woven together naturally.
For anyone seeking a place that invites discovery beyond the menu — a setting where every visit feels like returning to something both familiar and fresh — Joan’s in the Park offers a rare and thoughtful haven in the heart of St. Paul.

My boyfriend and I absolutely loved the food and atmosphere! We had a great time and the service was amazing. Side note, he proposed later that same night, so we will definitely be back!

No hyperbole, my experience at Joan's in the Park was probably the best restaurant experience I've ever had in my life. The setting was nice and intimate, the menu options were good and varied, and every dish was downright spectacular; I'd say each one was better than the last, but that'd be a disservice to how well put-together every single course is. My final course though was the filet mignon, and that was perfect. Not to mention the service! It was fantastic from start to finish, and I even got to briefly chat with one of the owners, who was great. Highly, highly recommend; definitely coming here again the next time I'm in town!

We had never heard of Joan’s but it popped up when I was searching for a tasting menu with availability on our anniversary. So glad we went! Everything felt very thoughtful. From taking our photo and printing it for us and cute heart confetti on the table, to how well the wine pairings worked with each dish. The atmosphere was unpretentious and cozy, and we could there’s a lot of love put into the place. It was also surprisingly affordable compared to other tasting menus we’ve done in the past. We will be back!

Joan’s is a staple in our household. We go to Joan’s for birthdays, anniversary’s, and anytime we just really need the best meal in town. It’s the place we recommend to every single person who asks where to eat for special events. Highly recommend the wine pairing as well, they are VERY generous with it, so be prepared to really feel it. We keep coming back, and hopefully can continue to come back for 50 more years.

Dining at Joan’s in the Park was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The attention to detail in both the service and presentation was top notch, and the food was absolutely outstanding—elevated and flavorful. A special touch was Joan herself stopping by to check on our meal, which added a warm, personal feel to the evening. The service was impeccable, making us feel truly cared for throughout. The cocktails were beautifully crafted and the old fashioned was one of the best we’ve had. Overall, a memorable and refined dining experience well worth visiting. We’ll definitely be back!

Unassuming restaurant in the quiet part of Snelling. Although it's nothing extravagant on the interior, the food is thoughtfully designed, prepared, cooked and plated. Every dish on the tasting is fantastic! Well worth the price. Service was great. The only let down was dessert ... that's a miss.

A lovely spot for an anniversary dinner. The indoor dining space is cozy and romantically lit. We adored all the little touches put into the ambiance, food, and dining experience. There is a covered patio attached to the restaurant as well and seemed to be plenty of street parking spots available. The menu is a four course meal with several items in each section to choose from. Everything we had was great, from the fresh pastry starters to the mains. My partner opted for the wine pairing which had very generous pours. We’d definitely go back for a special occasion!

This is the type of lovely little restaurant everyone wants in their neighborhood. Luckily for the people who live in Highland Park, they have Joan's. It is intimate, has great service, and is a lovely dining experience. At $89 for 4 courses, it is also very affordable. My particular favorites were the chicken liver mousse starter, which was delicious, and the toasted farro with porcini mushrooms and Parmesan. They had a steelhead trout special the day we went, which was served with fiddlehead ferns and morels - the epitome of spring! My husband loved the filet mignon. It was a great meal. I loved the pants cotta for dessert. Eating here is like eating at a friend's, but one that really knows how to cook. It is not hip or trendy - just well prepared food in a lovely setting.
